Four different things are often called a licence
A viewing subscription buys the package agreed with a provider. An app licence pays for the player software. Content-distribution rights determine whether a provider can supply a particular programme in a territory. The UK TV Licence has its own rules about the way you watch. Paying for one does not automatically provide all the others.
Internet delivery is a technology
IPTV describes television delivered using internet protocols. It can be used by authorised broadcasters and by services that lack permission. A polished website, a high channel count or the ability to play a stream is not proof of distribution rights. Check the actual provider and package before paying. See the government’s guidance on illicit streaming devices.
When a TV Licence is needed
In the UK, a TV Licence is generally required to watch or record live television on any channel or service, and to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer. The device used does not remove the requirement. Check the official TV Licence guidance for your circumstances and any applicable exceptions.
What to ask before subscribing
Confirm who supplies the service, which content is included and whether access is authorised for the UK. Ask for written package and cancellation information.
